i'm obsessed with augusten burroughs. he is my favorite writer. this is not an impressive bit of conversation at parties. shouldn't i prefer the "classics?" but noooo. it's augusten for me. a few examples of my utter dedication to him:1. i have purchased "running with scissors" no less than 6 times. that's because i'm constantly telling people they should read it, loaning them mine and MAGICALLY never seeing it again. well, you can't expect me to NOT own that book?!?!
2. i found augusten on myspace over a year ago. people were just leaving him comments. you could just send a message and KNOW that he'd read it. this caused me to FREEZE with the pressure of figuring out what to WRITE to my favorite author. i refuse to be a "omg! i'm you're biggest fan! i love you!" kind of girl. seriously though, what do you say to capture the attention of a super witty, funny, endearing wordsmith (i'm pretty sure that 's in the dictionary.)?? so, to this day, i've never said anything.
3. i'm pretty intentional about finding youtube clips and interviews online. i'm not IN LOVE with him, mind you. not exactly. i'm in love with his mind...i want to know everything he thinks. i want to figure out his brain and how it works.
so, PLEASE people, read his stuff. it's hilarious, it's heartbreaking, it'll make you feel good about life, and guilty for feeling good. it's ironic and detailed and SO visual...and it's profound and perverse and full of profanity. i'd loan you my copies, but i've learned my lesson!

Your #2 is cracking me up...I've read "Running with Scissors", it is a good book!
have you purchased the audiobooks? you'll fall for him even more. he's wonderful. i think i still love dry the best...it was an emotional rollercoaster and it's when i really feel like i connected with him.
have you tried david sedaris, david rakoff, or josh kilmer-purcell?
i read burroughs first, then sedaris didn't feel as great to me. i may try again. any particular one you suggest? i've not heard of the other authors, i'm stoked to check them out!
i've got RWS on audio book, and you're so right! i LOOOOVE hearing him read it!
